Rate Confirmation Checklist
Review every rate confirmation against this checklist before signing. Misunderstandings about rate, payment, or paperwork requirements are far easier to resolve before the truck rolls than after delivery.
Rate Confirmation Review
-
Never assume — verify the number in writing.
-
Most rate confirmations specify a free time window (often 2 hours) before detention pay kicks in.
-
Never pick up a load without a signed rate confirmation in hand.
Key Terms to Understand
- TONU (Truck Order Not Used)
- Compensation paid to the carrier if the broker cancels the load after the carrier has committed to it. Not all rate confirmations include TONU. Know whether yours does before committing your truck.
- Detention
- Pay for time spent waiting beyond the agreed free time at pickup or delivery. Most rate confirmations specify when detention begins and the hourly rate. Document your arrival and wait times.
- Lumper
- A third-party worker who unloads freight at the destination. Some facilities require lumpers. If the rate confirmation doesn't address who pays, clarify before delivery.
- FSC (Fuel Surcharge)
- May be included in the quoted rate or listed separately. Know which before accepting so you're not surprised.
